Welcome to Gates of Aedolyn!  We are a play-by-post, forum based roleplaying realm for those that enjoy quality amateur story writing.  As you can see, despite GoA being a relatively new realm, we have a large amount of canonized information in our Library.  I know it can seem a bit overwhelming, especially when you realize how much more there is to come, but don’t worry - you don’t need to know all of that info in order to get started.  Getting started does require some reading, but you have no way of knowing exactly what you should read.  That’s why I’ve written this.  The following steps will help you get started at GoA as quickly as possible.

Contents

Step One: Join GoA

Register for an account on the GoA Forums.  You may choose to register with a character name or with the OOC nickname you would like to use as a player.  You will be able to create multiple characters on this single account via the MCS (Multiple Character System).

Step Two: Learn the Rules

Make yourself familiar with GoA’s Community Rules and Roleplaying Rules.

Step Three: Introduce Yourself

Say hello and tell us a little about yourself in the Introductions Forum.  If you have any initial questions, this is a good time to ask them.  Later your questions should be asked in the Questions & Answers Forum.  Once you’ve introduced yourself, you may feel free to post in the OOC Community Forums, play some games, talk about movies, get to know us a little.  We strive to have a fun and friendly environment and encourage all of our members and staff to enjoy the OOC community.  By the way, if you click on “View In Popup”, the shout box will open as an actual chat room.  Feel free to chat with us in there, too.

Step Four: Create a Character

Time to make a character.  But first, there are several things that you need to know.  This is going to require no small amount of reading, so if that is a problem, I’m afraid you’ve come to the wrong place.  Reading and writing are what we do here.  Since that’s exactly what you were looking for, let’s get you started.

Race
Choose a race from those listed in the library under People.  Be sure to read the chosen race’s write-up carefully.  Many of the race names might sound familiar, but they are actually quite different from what you might expect.  They are a unique Aedolyn take on familiar themes.  Even the humans in Aedolyn are not the default “perfectly average” race you find in most realms.  Choose wisely!

Magic
Your character may or may not be a magic user, but either way, you the player should be familiar with the Magic of Aedolyn.  Magic plays an important part in our world and is available to anyone that wants to learn to wield it.  I strongly suggest that you also read the write-ups for the Faeries and the Draconi, as both of those races are intimately associated with magic.  Their write-ups may help to shed more light upon the Magic System write-up itself.

Where?
This is that “more to come” part I mentioned earlier.  So far, none of the nations or areas on the map have write-ups in the library (although, there are maps for all 6 Ages).  There are brief descriptions of each area in Aedolyn on the outside of their individual forums which will suffice to begin roleplaying, but specific write-ups have yet to be written.  We strongly encourage our members to contribute to fleshing out the realm.  Perhaps some of the future write-ups will come from you.

When?
Aedolyn’s present time is the post apocalyptic (fantasy style) 6th Age.  All player characters are to originate in the 6th Age and your RP will begin in the 6th Age.  To get started with a character in GoA, you really only need to know about the 6th Age.  You may need to know more later, but that can wait for now.  I do recommend that you read all of Aedolyn’s history at some point.  It is truly epic and worth taking the time to read.  You can’t play a character that knows history without knowing it yourself, after all.

That should be all of the realm related information you need to create a character.  The rest of the character information will come from your own imagination.  When you are ready to create your character, head to the Character Creation Guide and follow the instructions there.

It may take some time before your character is approved and we ask that you be patient with us.  There is more that you need to know before you can begin to roleplay in Aedolyn and this is a perfect time to do some more reading.  Feel free at any time during this process to ask questions in the Q&A Forum, pop into chat, or PM someone.  We are more than happy to help in any way that we can.

Step Five: Learn About Time Travel

Before you can begin to roleplay your character in the world of Aedolyn, you need to learn about these Gates you’ve heard mentioned.  They are the core aspect of the entire setting and destined to be the central focus of many plots.  The Gates of Aedolyn allow the people of Aedolyn to time travel to Ages past.  Read The Gates System to learn how it works.  There are descriptions of each gate and its environs in the Gate Descriptions write-up.  Time travel doesn’t come without a price, however, as the Limitations write-up explains.

Step Six: Begin Roleplaying

If your character has been approved by now, you are ready to begin roleplaying in Aedolyn.  I strongly recommend that as you roleplay for a while in the 6th Age, you set aside some time to read the entire war torn History of Aedolyn.  This is a world that has been greatly shaped by its history and one in which the people actual visit that history in person.  And it is well worth the read.

Eventually, you may wish to time travel with your character.  When that time comes, you will need to know to which point in history the gates currently lead.  You will find that information and a description of the state of Aedolyn at that time on the Current Rotation page.  By this time, you have hopefully read the entire history and perused the other write-ups in the Aedolyn Library.  Perhaps you have even submitted some of them yourself.

That about does it.  I’m sure you can take it from there and I look forward to seeing you in-character!
