Introduction
The Multiple Character System (MCS) is an addition to the Gates of Aedolyn forum which allows one account to utilize multiple characters, as opposed to a one account-one character setup. Ideally this system will streamline the Role-Playing process by eliminating unnecessary steps and aspects of forum use.
The MCS is a project that will be subject to constant change in attempt to improve and make the system more user friendly as possible. Using the MCS isn’t mandatory, but is highly recommended. For system news and updates, visit our ongoing topic of discussion in the Technical Lounge; The MCS: Discussion, Updates and Status.
What is the difference between my Forum Profile and Character Sheet?
The MCS is an addition/modification for SMF software. Given that, SMF (Simple Machines Forums) comes with its own profile system. Normally, to setup a profile for the forum, you go to Modify Profile -> Forum Profile to change your avatar, personal text, signature, etc. However, the MCS provides the “Character Sheets” where each character is allowed to have its own avatar, personal text and signature.
The main difference between the two is that your Forum Profile is related to information concerning your account, whereas the Character Sheets are related only to your characters.
Creating Your First Character
By default, your account already comes with one character. This character will be referred to as your “default character.” Your default character will come with the name, avatar, signature, etc of your original Forum Settings. Normally, however, after registration, it will already be created for you. To access your character, simply go to the Manage Characters page. To create more characters, click here (you can find this link on the Manage Characters page, as well).
What is the significance of my default character?
Your default character, if desired, could be the representative alias of your account. It is the only character that allows you to select the “Show Accounts on Posts” option in your Interface Preferences. This option takes away the "Account: [account name]" above your avatar on your posts. This way, it allows your character to be viewed as your “main.”
Developing Your Character
Working on your character using the MCS comes with advantages:
1) You can have multiple characters under one account, thus not creating a need to register multiple accounts on our forum.
2) You can use our system to write and store your character on our server.
3) Instead of other players scrambling through the Character Pool board trying to find your old application to learn more about your character, they can simply view your character profile. With the MCS, you can setup a customized character sheet for others to view publicly.

Managing Your Characters
To begin developing your character sheet, go to your profile section. Under “Modify Profile” find the link that says “Manage Characters.” Once your page has loaded, your new page will greet you with a select box next to “Select a Character”. Open this select box and choose the character that you wish to edit.
Once you’ve selected your character, another page will load and it will show four tabs:
1) Character Profile
2) Modify Character Sheet
3) Character Application
4) Interface Preferences
- Click on the “Modify Character Sheet” tab. You will be given a large section of fields in which you can fill out for your character sheet. For more on these, visit our Character Creation Guide.
Using the Miscellaneous Fields
The sections and fields provided are mostly general for each character to fill out. However, for those with more ambition, and we encourage this, you are welcome to add more to it. To do this, you can use the “Miscellaneous Development” section. To add more to your character sheet, click on the “Click here to add more fields.” link provided and fill out the textbox as follows.
What goes where?
-
The textbox on the left is the “Title” of your new field. Much like “History” is the title of the history section.
-
The larger textbox on the right is where the data or paragraphs of information should be placed.
What is ‘Show on Profile’?
-
The ‘Show on Profile’ option is there if you want your new field to show on your public character sheet. If this is selected, everyone will be able to see it To keep this private, however, simply leave it unchecked.
Saving, Previewing, and Deleting
Down at the bottom of the “Modify Character Sheet” tab, you have three basic options: Save Character, Preview, and Delete Character. We highly recommend that before saving your character, you use our preview option to best adjust your character as much as possible.
