Money in Aedolyn

In the interest of clarity, this article is written from an out of character (OOC) perspective.  In the interest of simplicity, money in Aedolyn is universal.  Every nation uses the same materials and the same denominations.  The only difference might be the face that is etched upon the coin.  The materials used for coins are:  Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

10 Copper Coins = 1 Silver Coin

10 Silver Coins = 1 Gold Coin

10 Gold Coins = 1 Platinum Coin

Now, knowing the above is fine, but being able to count your money is not the same as knowing how to spend it.  Continuing with the concept of ‘simplicity’, let’s equate each denomination with good old American Dollars (other nationalities will have to do their own adjustments.  Sorry!).

1 Copper Coin = 1 Dollar

1 Silver Coin = 10 Dollars

1 Gold Coin = 100 Dollars

1 Platinum Coin = 1,000 Dollars

Using that as a guide, you may simply assume that things in Aedolyn cost relatively the same as they might in the real world.  The difference is that you express it in copper and gold, rather than dollars.  For example, let’s say that a night at a cheap motel costs 35 dollars - A night at an Inn in Aedolyn might cost 3 ½ Silvers.  If a good dinner at a decent restaurant costs 12 dollars, it would be a Silver piece and a couple of Coppers in Aedolyn.  Etc.

It doesn’t have to be exact, prices differ from place to place and from merchant to merchant, but if every player in the realm figures money and prices on this simple system, we will all be on the same page… or close enough that it won’t be an issue.

Should we get annoying and talk about inflation in cities? How meals and hotels will cost more in towns based on tourism? How after the coming of the Sixth Age, a massive depression swept Aedolyn, and now money is hard to come by? Or that it was the Goblins, who worship Asvel, the Merchant, that managed to establish equal monetary coinage across all the lands? That this was done so that trade could prosper during the Second Age, and it signified a great advancement in the cooperation of nations?

No, I guess that defeats the purpose of keeping things simple.

She makes a good point.  From an IC standpoint, there is a lot of information left out of this article.  This article is intended to provide an easy to remember and easy to use system of figuring any monetary concerns that might come up in your RP.  Eventually, there will be detailed economic information included in the individual Nation write-ups, but for simply earning and spending some coin in your RP, this is all you -need- to know.
