Reason A major aspect of GoA is the option of time travel. Time travel has always been a touchy and controversial subject and here at GoA we attempt to make it a possibility. In order to do this in a fair and balanced way it requires regulation, thus we provide limitations in an attempt to manage this is a way that is accepted by everyone. Since this system is relatively new, problems must be ironed out. Feel free to provide comments and criticism and above all suggestions for improvement since this system is by no means set in stone; it will be continually subject to change.
To start, it is important to set our foundation on the general concept of time as a whole. Therefore, we offer the Golden Rule: what happened was what was meant to happen. It may seem strict, but this rule is quite vague when it comes to means and ends. For example, something happened in the past (i.e. the death of a loved one) and your character is set on preventing that from happening; your character may be able to prevent the death of that person at that moment, but according the Golden Rule, circumstances may change, but that person will die by some other means within the near future to balance out time. Means are flexible, but ends are set. The Golden Rule exists for two main reasons: (1) to prevent players from altering the foundation of Aedolyn history and changing everything about the side and (2) to allow for creative character development without having time travel be the center of all characters’ plots and to dampen the chaotic effect that time travel may have.
The Four Time Travel Regulations 1. A character is permitted to travel to the past as many times as they prefer; however, the duration of their trips are slightly limited. Characters are allowed to remain in the past for the entirety of each rotation but with some consequences. Trips that last longer than three months begin to wear on the traveler. Mild Time Sickness begins to be felt around the three month mark and it progresses to the moderate stage around the four months mark until finally five or more months in the severe symptoms begin to show. We recommend limiting trips to roughly three months for the mental and physical well being of your character.
2. Meddling in the timeline of your own character is prohibited. What this means is that one cannot change the present by going into the past (as expressed in the Golden Rule presented above). However, if a circumstance arises where one would need to involve themselves with their past timeline in order to preserve the present, then such actions are encouraged in order to prevent changes to the present and the predetermined. Additionally, an in-character check exists which is incorporated into the theory of Time Sickness. If a character’s action directly results in historical events (major or minor) an appropriate degree of Time Sickness will be felt. If a character continues to or majorly violates this law, they will be automatically warped back to the present and experience severe symptoms of Time Sickness.
3. Characters can take place in but not significantly alter historical events.
4. No living things can be brought from the past to the present (i.e. people, animals, plants, etc.); however, the opposite is not the case. The age and condition of all items brought back and forth do not change as they go from one time to another. Only time can wear on an object.
