Lawful GoodThis character acts with compassion and generosity, honor and vigilance. They support their government and religious order, and they often go so far as to dedicate their actions to said organization. Moral conflicts often center around the dilemma of obedience or intuition. Orders may conflict with the needs of the immediate situation, and occasionally two separate forces, i.e. religious and political, have conflicting orders.
Neutral GoodThis character acts with benevolence and kindness, altruistically and intuitively. They do not bind their actions to the will of rules or traditions, while still supporting their general good intentions. These characters often find themselves in the predicament of defending their decisions, because they may or may not be beneficial to the politic in power, i.e. a doctor who treats soldiers on both sides of the battle field.
Chaotic GoodThis character is kind and openhanded, rebellious and independent. They favor change for a greater good, and do not adhere to the guidelines of bureaucratic organizations. Freedom is highly valued for themselves and the greater world. Their methods sometimes hinder their endeavors because of the lack of organization and obstinate defiance. These characters have been known to act contrary to their altruistic beliefs because of this liberty of protocol. They also lash out more violently towards the evil forces than other good aligned characters.
Lawful NeutralThey are traditional and orderly, disciplined and obedient. These characters believe in lawful concepts such as honor and decency. They often take it upon themselves to enforce the law with a blind eye to the evil or virtue of the opposing character. Their moral considerations are not tainted or skewed, but secondary to their dedication to the organization and/or code that they follow.
True NeutralThese characters are open-minded and impartial, uninvolved and equitable. They do not feel strongly towards any alignment. Members of this alignment range from farmers interested in feeding their family to rogues and thieves playing the best of all alignments. Some neutral characters are committed to a balance between alignments rather than indecision and nonpartisan. These characters strive to stabilize the polar forces of good and evil, order and chaos.
Chaotic NeutralThese characters are free and independent, lawless and unbiased. They generally shirk any and all tradition, including the guiding principles of righteousness and immorality, in favor of liberation. The only reliable thing about them is how unreliable they are. Typically they act out of self-interest, but do not enjoy the suffering of others. Madmen who are not evil, but completely lack control may also be of this alignment. A very chaotic neutral character may appear insane with their constant revision of decisions.
Lawful EvilThese characters are diabolic and dominating, viscous and commanding. They exploit well-ordered systems and are both obedient and self-serving. This includes tyrants and mercenaries who impose laws or follow contracts. A soldier of a good aligned nation that relishes killing may also fall into this alignment. These characters, as with their lawful good counterparts, need to balance their motivation with their orders.
Neutral EvilThese characters are inconsiderate and self-serving, detached and impersonal. They have no qualms about turning on allies or harming others in the pursuit of their desires. The abide convenient laws and oftentimes are not ruthlessly violent unless it will benefit their self interest. These are the henchmen that plot behind their superior's back and the assassins that switch sides when the pay is right.
Chaotic EvilThese characters are destructive and maniacal, disorderly and impulsive. The rules hold no sway over their actions, and their motivations are dictated by unadulterated selfishness. They viciously value and protect their self-rule and resent the laws of others. Fear is the only cause for obedience. It is not compulsory for a Chaotic Evil character to be constantly performing sadistic acts just for the sake of being evil, or constantly disobeying orders just for the sake of causing chaos. They do enjoy the suffering of others and view honor as weakness. Serial killers and monsters are often of this alignment.
